Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD: Which should I get?

Should I buy an HD DVD or a Blu-ray DVD player?
- Asked: November 28, 2007
- CNET says you shouldn't buy either one, Consumer Reports says to wait at least another year, and Walt Mossberg of the Wall Street Journal agrees. The format war is nowhere near over, and no victor is in sight. Even Sir Howard Stringer of Sony (Blu-ray's major supporter) says the war is at a "stalemate".
Still desperate to watch high-def DVDs?
- With neither format a clear leader (Consumer Reports says both formats are equally good), it's a matter of which fits your personal preferences the most.
Science fiction fans: HD-DVD
- Sci-fi fans should go with HD-DVD; the special-effects-upgraded original "Star Trek", "Serenity" and "Battlestar Galactica" are in that format.
Disney fans: Blu-ray
- Are you a Disney-holic? Disney is only available on Blu-ray high-definition DVDs.
Blockbuster members: Blu-ray
- Rent your movies from Blockbuster? They only carry Blu-ray.
Frugal HD fans: HD-DVD
- Is price primary? Toshiba's HD-A2 is widely available for $99 for the Christmas season.
Gamers: Blu-ray
- Are you a gamer? Buy a Playstation 3; the Blu-ray player is built in.
Most popular: Blu-ray (for now)
- Want to go with the one that's sold the most? According to Engadget, Blu-ray has close to 2/3 of the market share, though with HD-DVD price cuts, that may change by the end of December.
