A blister forms when the outer layer of skin separates from the dermis and fluid forms in between. A blister will look like a bubble or bubbles on the skins and be soft and squishy. The fluid inside of a blister is called serum. If a blister does not get popped the serum can bring a natural protection for the underlying skin.

There are many causes for blisters. Blisters can be caused by irritation, like when a shoe causes friction on the skin, it can make a blister. Other causes of blisters include allergies such as contact dermatitis, which is a reaction to a chemical irritant. Some infections can cause blisters such as chickenpox and cold sores. Blisters can also be caused by skin diseases and medications.

A blister is better left alone because breaking them increases the chance of infection. If a blister does break, wash the area with soap and water and apply a bandage. If you find it necessary to drain the fluid from a blister wash the area thoroughly with soap and water then use a sterile needle leaving the overlying skin intact. Afterwards, apply an antibiotic ointment and cover the blister with a bandage.
