Black Panther Party

Primarily active in the 1960s and 1970s, The Black Panther Party had the goal of promoting civil rights and defending oppressed people. Though it began as an African American group, it would grow to include all races in its mission. The Black Panthers were different from many activist groups of the time due to their promotion of armed protest.¹

The Black Panthers outlined their major goals in their Ten Point Program:²

Ending the robbery of the black community by the white community
Decent housing
Education
Exemption from military service for black men
End to police brutality
Freedom for all imprisoned black men
True jury of peers for black people on trial
Bread, housing, education, clothing, justice, peace
