Black & White 2, the sequel to Black & White, is a city-building simulation game combined with elements of real-time strategy. The player takes on the role of a god, who has been called upon to help his followers on Earth. The player can choose between being an evil god, who rules by fear and conquest, a good god, who tends to his people with kindness, or a neutral god.

As is standard in RTS games, the player can create disciples to perform the more menial tasks of maintaining a kingdom. There are a number of roles these disciples can play, such as farmers, builders, soldiers or scholars. The player can also create a physical manifestation of himself on Earth, choosing between a wolf, cow, ape or lion.¹ Owners of the Battle of the Gods expansion pack can also summon a tiger or turtle creature.²
