BioShock takes place in an alternate history set in the 1960s. It tells the story of Jack, an airplane crash survivor, who finds himself stranded in the middle of the north Atlantic Ocean. He makes his way to a crumbling lighthouse, which leads to the city of Rapture on the ocean floor. Rapture was built in 1946 by Andrew Ryan, who sought to create a utopia with unhindered capitalism and free from government.
At its height, the city housed several thousand residents. Jack finds a city slowly being swallowed by the ocean, whose inhabitants are now either dead or genetically mutated. Jack must somehow escape from the dying city and uncover the truth behind Rapture's demise.
