Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe in the small town of Hope, Arkansas, in 1946. His father died in a car accident before he was born, and when he became a teenager, he adopted the surname of his stepfather, Roger Clinton. A highly intelligent student, Clinton went on to attend Georgetown University, received a Rhodes Scholarship and studied at Oxford University in England in 1968, and received a law degree from Yale Law School in 1973.

Political Career

In the 1960s, Clinton protested the Vietnam War, and in 1972 he became involved with the political campaign of Democratic Presidential candidate George McGovern in Texas. In 1978, Clinton was elected Governor of Arkansas at the age of 32.

Presidency

In 1992, Clinton beat incumbent President George H.W. Bush and billionaire Ross Perot to become the 42nd President of the United States. He was re-elected in 1996, defeating Senator Robert Dole. In the 1994 Congressional Elections, the Republicans captured both houses of Congress by promising a "Contract with America" and Clinton's ambitious domestic program for the nation suffered a setback. In 1998, the Republican-controlled House of Representatives impeached Clinton for lying under oath regarding an alleged affair with Paula Jones. However, the Senate fell short of the two-thirds of majority necessary to convict the President
