Best Shooter Games of 2007 Highlights
1. Mahalo's Guide to Halo 3 (Xbox 360)
- IGN: Halo 3 Review 9.5
- There will be plenty of aspects for fans to nitpick, but it's hard to argue against Halo 3 as the most complete game available on any console.
- GameSpot: Halo 3 Review 9.5
- you're willing to put into them. On the surface, Halo 3 is every bit the sequel you would expect it to be, in that it delivers meaningful upgrades to both the story-driven and competitive sides of the package.
- 1UP: Halo 3 Review 10
- It's hard to imagine a feature of this game that someone won't love (we didn't even get to talk about the robust file sharing, where you can swap gameplay screenshots, edited game films, game setups, and maps).
2. Mahalo's Guide to BioShock (Xbox 360, PC)
- IGN: BioShock Review 9.7
- BioShock stands as a monolithic example of the convergence of entertaining gameplay and an irresistibly sinister, engrossing storyline that encompasses a host of multifaceted characters. This is an essential gaming experience.
- GameSpot: BioShock Review 9
- But BioShock's real strengths are as a compelling work of interactive fiction, and as a unique ride through a warped world with some great payoff built into its mysterious plot. If that description has you even the least bit interested, you won't be disappointed one bit.
- 1UP: BioShock Review 10
- No creation is ever truly flawless. Some might miss certain elements that were unique to System Shock 2 (BioShock's spiritual predecessor), while others might lament that there weren't enough compelling reasons to revisit areas you've already cleared.
3. Mahalo's Guide to The Orange Box (Xbox 360, PC)
- IGN: The Orange Box Compilation Xbox 360/PC Reviews 9.5
- There's nothing else available on any console like The Orange Box. Though you could argue that Half-Life 2 is old news by now, there are still four components of the Box brand new to consoles.
- GameSpot: The Orange Box Xbox 360/PC Review 9.5
- It's practically guaranteed that if you enjoy video games, you'll find at least one thing to like in this collection, though there's also a very good chance that you'll really enjoy all of it.
- 1UP: The Orange Box Compilation Reviews 10
- seriously, even at $60, Orange Box is value-priced to the point of philanthropy.
4. Mahalo's Guide to Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360, PS3, PC)
- IGN: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review 9.4
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is a fantastic game. The single-player experience is easily Infinity Ward's best work to date. Calling it intense may be an understatement.
- GameSpot: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review 9
- The quality of the content in the campaign is totally top-shelf, and the multiplayer is some of the best around, making this a truly superb package.
- 1UP: Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare Review 9.5
- With proven mechanics, brilliant visuals and sound, a satisfying campaign, and robust multiplayer, COD4 is one of the best FPS packages of the year -- no small feat, considering the competition.
5. Mahalo's Guide to Crysis (PC)
- IGN: Crysis Review 9.4
- Overall, Crysis is definitely another win for Crytek and another one of those games that's more than the sum of its parts.
- Gamespot: Crysis Review 9.5
- If you put it all together, Crysis is just remarkable. This is a game that pushes the envelope in terms of both technology and gameplay and does so with aplomb.
- 1UP: Crysis Review 8
- Fast forward through scraps of miserable story and melodramatic dialogue, along with a "boss battle" inherited from the coin-op class of '88 (see: Contra), and the ordeal is done -- beautiful throughout, mostly amazing, but vegetative by the end.
6. Mahalo's Guide to Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (Wii) Mahalo's Guide to Metroid Prime 3: Corruption
- IGN Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Review 9.5
- We rated the original Metroid Prime a 9.8 on GameCube and had Corruption been the first game in the series it'd have been worthy of the same score. As it stands, Samus Aran's latest adventure is a spectacular must-own experience and one of Wii's defining games. Stop reading and buy it.
- Gamespot Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Review 8.5
- It's got exactly what you would expect from the last in an acclaimed trilogy of titles: great boss battles, involved environmental puzzles, and a smooth control scheme that cements exactly how FPS controls should work on the platform.
- 1UP Metroid Prime 3: Corruption Review 9.0
- On the whole, Corruption takes advantage of the Wii's biggest strength (with its unique controls), and minimizes its greatest weakness (through astounding art direction), while otherwise maintaining or improving upon the high standards and overall polish the series is known for.
7. Mahalo's Guide to Enemy Territory: Quake Wars (PC)
- IGN: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Review 8.5
- The formula set forth in Return to Castle Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory in 2003 has evolved rather well with Quake Wars, delivering a distinct gameplay experience centered around team dynamics.
- Gamespot: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Review 8.5
- If you're an Enemy Territory veteran, this is the logical next step for you. And if you've been turned off by team shooters in the past, this one may change your mind.
- 1UP: Enemy Territory: Quake Wars Review 9.0
- But when a game is built as carefully as Quake Wars -- for play online and offline, for new players and veterans, for quick thrills and long learning curves, for hyper action and careful tactics -- this is as good as it gets.
