Guide Note
Ben Folds is a pop/rock singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist (though most noted as a pianist). He grew up playing piano, bass, and drums in several bands and had a stint as a session drummer in Nashville in the early '90s (where he moved after getting a publishing deal). Eventually he moved back to his home state of North Carolina and formed Ben Folds Five (a deceptive name, considering it was a trio) with Robert Sledge (bass) and Darren Jessee (drums). Their second album, 1997's Whatever and Ever, Amen, was a hit, due in part to heavy airplay of the single "Brick." Audiences responded to Folds' humerous but heartfelt lyrics and his obvious talents as a musician.
Ben Folds Five released another album before disbanding and allowing Folds to go it alone. That he did, as his first solo release, Rockin' the Suburbs, involved Folds playing most of the music himself. His next studio album was Songs For Silverman in 2005. Folds continues to record and tour for his solo music in addition to collaborating with other artists in side projects.
