Health Problems

Belgian shepherds will commonly suffer from eye, joint and thyroid problems as well as epilepsy and cancer. Because of their low percentage of body fat, they may have complications when undergoing anesthesia.

Sports or Activities

Much like their name suggests, the Belgian shepherds can be used for herding. They are highly trainable which makes them a good candidate for guide dogs. They do require daily exercise and human attention. Belgian shepherds that are often left alone or are not sufficiently exercised may become destructive.

Types of Belgian Shepherd Dog

The laekenois is considered to be the foundation of the four Belgian shepherd dog breeds and has a rough brown coat. The groenendael is black with a long coat. The tervueren is long coated and can be any color other than black. The malinois has a short yellow coat and black ears.
