Beagle

The Beagle is a medium-sized hound dog originally bred for hunting due to its sense of smell. Variations of the breed have existed for centuries, but the modern Beagle originated in England in the early 19th century.¹ One of the world's most beloved characters, Snoopy, from the Peanuts comic strip, is a Beagle.

The Beagle has a typical life span of approximately 12 years. The breed is susceptible to dwarfism and epilepsy. They are also prone to ear infection and eye problems.² Due to the passive nature of the breed, the beagle is a popular choice for animal testing.³

Beagles are often bred for hunting, scent tracking and stamina.⁴ They are also used as detector dogs at airports based on their sensitive sense of smell, calm demeanor, pleasant nature and ability to work in crowded areas.⁵
