Gameplay
Battle Arena Toshinden utilized the 3D environment and was the first game to incorporate the "sidestep" move. The game emphasizes this aspect, and the majority of the gameplay is based on dodging as well as attacking. Characters have the basic attacks such as kick, punch, low punch, and low kick. The game, however, reacts slowly to commands1.1 There are eight different characters to choose from and players can either play single mode against the computer or battle against a friend.
Reception
The game received a 7/10 from IGN. Battle Arena Toshinden was the first game to utilize the sidestep maneuver. Many 3D fighting games after that incorporated the move to further enhance the 3D experience. The game was also hailed for its graphics as IGN stated "the backgrounds are gorgeous and the detail in the characters' faces is exceptional..."1.2
