Batten disease is a genetically inherited disease that is characterized by the development of lipopigments in the nervous system and eyes. Lipopigments are protein and lipid substances. When they deposit into tissue, lipopigments inhibit tissue functioning. Batten disease causes a person's mental capabilities and eyesight to degenerate.¹ ²

Treatment

The occurrence in the United States is about three out of every 100,000 births. Occurrence is higher in families that are known to carry the defective gene.¹
