History
The baseball cap was popularized by its use in baseball games. The Brooklyn Excelsiors were the first team to wear the style of hat in 1860. In its earlier style, the hat was softer with the dome having little support. The brim of the hat was shorter than what we expect in the modern day cap. In the 1940s latex rubber was used to give the hat more support and structure. The purpose of the cap is to serve as a piece of equipment that is designed to keep the sun or night lights out of a player's eyes. The cap is also used as a representation of the team and display of its uniform logo.
Buying Guide
Baseball hats come in several styles and colors. They are available, however, in two different general designs. There is the One-Size-Fits-All design which features an adjustable strap on the back which is usually plastic with small snap buttons or a cloth strap device with a buckle. The second design is a fitted cap. The cap is constructed to a specific head size. In Major League Baseball the cap traditionally used is the fitted cap, and is traditionally more comfortable than the adjustable variety.
