Barack Obama Campaign

Guide Note
As a junior senator, Barack Obama's February 10, 2007 announcement that he would run for the 2008 Presidential Nomination against long-accepted favorite Hillary Clinton was initially met with mixed reviews. However, through aggressive fundraising and a grassroots campaign strategy inspired by Howard Dean's 2004 primary run, the Barack Obama Campaign has managed to build extensive support, leading to a mathematically certain lead in both the popular vote and the delegate count for the Democratic Party nomination.
On May 10, 2008, five superdelegates came out to back Obama. This meant that, for the first time, Obama had surpassed Clinton in the fight for the superdelegates - whose votes will be decisive in choosing the Democratic presidential candidate.
Since winning a primary in North Carolina and coming a close second in Indiana, Clinton has looked increasingly like a lame duck in the nomination contest. Indeed, Obama noticeably shifted rhetorical attention to John McCain, his potential opponent on November 4.
