History

Bangkok was originally established as a small trading community during the Ayutthaya Kingdom (1350-1767). In 1767, King Taksin established a new capital named Thonburi in today's Bangkok area. In 1782, Thonburi was renamed Krung Thep Maha Nakhon by King Buddha Yodfa Chulaloke. On April 21, 1782, Bangkok became the capital of Thailand.

Long Name

The full name of the city is: Krung Thep Mahanakhon Amon Rattanakosin Mahinthara Yuthaya Mahadilok Phop Noppharat Ratchathani Burirom Udomratchaniwet Mahasathan Amon Piman Awatan Sathit Sakkathattiya Witsanukam Prasit, which can be roughly translated as: The city of angels, the great city, the residence of the Emerald Buddha, the impregnable city (of Ayutthaya) of God Indra, the grand capital of the world endowed with nine precious gems, the happy city, abounding in an enormous Royal Palace that resembles the heavenly abode where reigns the reincarnated god, a city given by Indra and built by Vishnukarn.⁴
