The Maiden Tower
The Maiden Tower is Baku's signature landmark. The age of the mysterious structure, located near the shore in Baku's old city (called the Inner City), is undetermined, although some scholars place it as having been built in the 12th Century. Its purpose is a mystery as well, and it contains several bizarre characteristics, including a door on the fourth floor that opens out into empty space. Along with The Vatican and the Taj Mahal, the tower is one of less than a thousand UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
