The cheapest bagel slicers consist of a frame with a slit to allow space for a bread knife. These slicers provide some protection from the knife and also create even slices. More expensive bagel guillotine styles have a guillotine type blade that slides through the bagel. These do not require the sawing that is needed when working with bread knives.
