BAM Racing
Guide Note:
Owned by the husband and wife team of Beth Ann and Tony Morgenthau, BAM Racing fields the Number 49 Toyota Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. The team’s name was created by using Beth Ann’s initials. A life long racing fan, beginning with watching the Indy cars and following the careers of such drivers as A.J. Foyt,Jackie Stewart and Phil Hill, she is the only female car owner in NASCAR that did not have family connections in racing prior to becoming a team owner.
During the 2003 season BAM Racing had to field their car without sponsorship for multiple races. During the course of the 2007 season in order to find sponsors BAM Racing launched an advertising campaign, which included posting video clips on YouTube.
After failing to qualify for 11 of 15 races driver Mike Bliss resigned midway through the season. Originally John Andretti was hired to drive in 2008, but his contract would be nullified in order to rehire NASCAR veteran driver Ken Schrader. Since his NASCAR debut in 1984 Schrader has had one hundred eighty four Top Ten finishes. The stated reason was the team owners, the Morgenthaus , felt Schrader would attract more sponsors. Microsoft would become a sponsor of the number 49 Toyota in early 2008.
BAM competed in the Budweiser Shootout, but failed to qualify for the first two races of the year. Since the team’s launch in 2002, BAM Racing has entered one hundred sixty seven Cup races. So far they have yet to win a race, have had six top ten finishes and have only led 43 laps.
