Ayahuasca
Ayahuasca is a hallucinogenic beverage made from a combination of several plants. It has been used for hundreds of years by natives of the
Amazon Rainforest for religious and medicinal purposes. It is reputed to have an unspeakably foul taste. In 2006, the
United States Supreme Court unanimously decided that it was legal for certain religious organizations to use the drug. Currently, scientists are studying its possible use in the treatment of drug addiction and
alcoholism, as well as the treatment of
anxiety and
depressive disorders.

Spiritual Aspects
Ayahuasca is used by various religious groups in a ritual capacity.2 Descriptions of the effects of use include contact with spiritual entities (including God), and psychic connection with other users, especially the guiding shaman(s).2 The purpose of the guiding shaman(s) is to act as a guardian against malicious spirits and to assist the users in their attempt to cleanse themselves through the visions.1, 2
