Atoms

Guide Note

Atoms are the smallest portion of a chemical element that can not be divided any further without losing the unique properties of that element. They consist of neutrons, protons and a nucleus surrounded by electrons. They are the building blocks of all forms of matter.

Fast Facts

  1. All elements are made up of atoms
  2. Atoms have the same number of protons as electrons
  3. Protons have a positive charge
  4. Neutrons have no charge
  5. Electrons have a negative charge and circle the nucleus
  6. Discovered by J.J. Thomson in 1897

Glossary

  1. Electrons: Negatively charged subatomic particle that is in constant motion in the outer region of an atom
  2. Protons: Positively charged particles located in the nucleus
  3. Nuetrons: Particles that carry no charge and are found in the nucleus
  4. Nucleus: Very small dense region in the center of the atom that holds the neutrons and protons
