Art Spiegelman

Guide Note

Art Spiegelman is a comic book artist, writer and editor. He is best known for creating Maus, a Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel based on his father's life during the Holocaust.

In 1992, editor Tina Brown hired Spielgeman as an illustrator for The New Yorker. He remained at the magazine for ten years, but resigned shortly following the September 11th terrorist attacks on the city. His cover art for the magazine's September 24th issue, depicting the two towers of the World Trade Center as a black-on-black image, has become one of the most famous in the publication's history. In 2004, Spielgeman released In the Shadow of No Towers, which recount his own experience on the day of the attack.

Since that time, Spielgeman has published three hardcover anthologies of comics for children. He continues to lecture worldwide as an advocate for the comics medium.
