Arranged Marriage is a type of marriage that is negotiated by the parents of the couple, as opposed to the husband and wife deciding to marry for themselves. This type of marriage has been practiced in many civilizations throughout history. Though it is less common in the modern era, it is still practiced today in the Middle East, parts of Africa, Asia and India.1

Arranged Marriages Around the World
China, India, and Indonesia are common countries for arranged marriages. Family of the two involved in the marriage set a common fifteen minute meeting for the pair and a few months later a wedding is set. Dating is not allowed in arrange marriages. For Indian families, the man is usually three to six years older than the woman and while dowries were once common, they are considered illegal in the country.2
