Fast Facts
- Was started to join scientists with volunteers1
- Founded by the Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation and the Avon Foundation1
- Volunteers can do surveys or donate tissue, fluids1
- There is a need to research women "with and without breast cancer to understand the molecular changes"1
- Most breast cancer research is done on animals2
- Human breast fluid is easy to get, researchers have a hard time getting the amount necessary2
How it Works
- Register as a volunteer on the web site
- Volunteers are emailed updates about research studies looking for volunteers
- Volunteers that want to participate reply to the email
- An Army of Women staff member contacts the volunteer
- Volunteers only choose research studies that they want to participate in1
Quotes
"It's easy to write a check for a worthy cause. Being a part of the Army requires a little more effort. Having done both, I know writing a check doesn't feel as gratifying as being a part of breast cancer prevention research." -- Joan Young, volunteer3
"Right now, I can only study breast cancer after it's been detected. This has allowed me to learn an incredible amount about what happens after cells acquire the genetic changes that lead them to become cancer cells. Getting tissue from women who have not yet been diagnosed with breast cancer will allow me to gain insight into what is causing these cancer cells to form in the first place." -- Thea Titsy, PhD, cancer researcher3
