Antihistamines can be either an over-the-counter or prescription medicine that are used to prevent symptoms of allergies, including allergic rhinitis, hay fever and hives. Antihistamines come in tablet, syrup, liquid, capsule, injection and suppository form.

Antihistamines work by stopping the effects of histamine, which is produced by the body when a person has an allergic reaction. Histamine is what causes the itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes when you have an allergic to something.

Antihistamines can be taken with food or milk to avoid stomach irritation. Follow your doctor's dosing instructions or the instructions on the label if using the over-the-counter type.
