On October 2, 2008, Lumet's name was reported in various celebrity blogs as having had a rumored affair with Republican presidential candidate John McCain. The alleged affair between Lumet and McCain was said to have taken place during the Gulf War while Lumet was married to conservative political columnist P.J.
