History
Amherst College was founded by a former president of Williams College, who felt a premier academic institution should be located in a more dense population center of the state. The two schools still maintain a rivalry. Amherst was originally an all-male school, and opened its doors to women in 1975.
Reputation
Amherst is one of the most competitive schools in the country. It consistently ranks in the top 10 for colleges of its size in the United States. Students who attend the school are able to take classes at other academic institutions in the area through the Five Colleges Consortium. It has a thriving study-abroad program.
