At the beginning of his career, Courage was employed by MGM Studios and worked on several movies, which include Show Boat, The Band Wagon and Gigi. After his film work, he transitioned to television. At this time, he composed the Star Trek: The Original Series music. He worked on some other Star Trek series, but quit shortly after because of disagreements over royalties with Gene Roddenberry.

Alexander Courage died on May 15, 2008. His health had been declining for several months. He died in Los Angeles, California at an assisted living facility.
