Afghanistan was first founded in 1747, when the tribes gathered under Ahmad Shah Durrani's leadership. The country won its independence from England in 1919. The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in the 1979 and struggled to maintain its control. After heavy loses to both parties, the Soviet Union withdrew in 1989.
In 1996 Afghanistan came under the control of the Taliban, which had been established since 1994. After 9-11, the Taliban was overthrown by the United States for protecting Osama Bin Ladin.
In December of 2004, Hamid Karzai was elected president of Afghanistan.
