Aarushi Talwar

The body of 14 year old Aarushi Talwar was found on May 16, 2008.

She was found with her throat slit and several stab wounds to her face.

On May 23, 2008, Rajesh Talwar, Aarushi Talwar's father, was arrested and charged with the murder of his daughter and Hemraj, the family's servant.

Murder and Motive

Rajesh Talwar was having an affair with a fellow doctor. His daughter and Hemraj both knew about it and discussed it with each other and with people they knew.¹

When Rajesh Talwar came home from work the evening of the murder, he found his daughter and Hemraj in her bedroom, possibly talking about the affair.¹

He took Hemraj out to the terrace and hit him over the head and then slit his throat. The body was covered with the cover from the water cooler.

After he killed Hemraj, he went and killed Aarushi Talwar by slitting her throat.¹

Claims

Claims were made early in the investigation that Aarushi Talwar and the male servant Hemraj were very close—too close for Rajesh Talwar's liking.²

Early policy reports claimed that when Rajesh Talwar came home, he found his daughter and servant in her bedroom in an "objectionable position". It was suggested that this discovery led him to kill his own daughter and his servant.²

Aarushi Talwar's friends say that these claims are false and their friend was not that kind of girl.²

A Child's Rights Panel has condemned the accusations and called for a formal explanation from the head of police.³
