The Academy Award-winning film 8 Mile is about the trials and tribulations of a young white rapper coming up in Detroit, Michigan. The story is loosely based on the life of star Marshall Mathers (Eminem).

Setting
The movie was filmed and based in Detroit, and includes real life places such as St. Andrews Hall, The Shelter and Eight Mile road, which separates Detroit from its northern suburbs. -
Storyline
The film follows Jimmy "B-Rabbit" Smith, played by Eminem, as he struggles to try to make something of his life and move out of his mother's trailer park home. Jimmy works in a metal stamping plant in the auto industry, while trying to perfect his rapping skills in his spare time. Jimmy's childhood friend, Future, played by Mekhi Phifer, organizes the rap battles in Detroit and gets Jimmy a spot at an upcoming battle. Jimmy unwillingly enters the competition, but chokes on stage when it is his turn to battle. The film continues as Jimmy tries to make his mark as a Caucasian in predominantly African American business. -
