The company Pixel Qi is reportedly developing a $75 laptop, as a commercial spin-off of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization's highly publicized XO-1. Pixel Qi is a separate affiliate of OLPC, founded by former OLPC chief technology officer Mary Lou Jepsen. There is currently no release date, but this page will be updated as information surfaces.
Background
One Laptop Per Child began production of its innovative low-cost XO-1 laptop in November, 2007, intended for educational use, particularly for children in developing countries. As that company's founding chief technology officer, Jepsen oversaw the XO-1's development and invented some of its key technologies, such as the low-power sunlight-readable display. Jepsen's own company has announced plans to produce a commercially available $75 laptop similar to the XO-1. The XO-1 is currently only available for education and costs $188 per laptop. According to the Pixel Qi official site, the company is not a competitor with OLPC, but a collaborator.
