$75 Laptop

  • The company Pixel Qi is reportedly developing a $75 laptop, as a commercial spin-off of the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) organization's highly publicized XO-1. Pixel Qi is a separate affiliate of OLPC, founded by former OLPC chief technology officer Mary Lou Jepsen. There is currently no release date, but this page will be updated as information surfaces.
  • Background

One Laptop Per Child began production of its innovative low-cost XO-1 laptop in November, 2007, intended for educational use, particularly for children in developing countries. As that company's founding chief technology officer, Jepsen oversaw the XO-1's development and invented some of its key technologies, such as the low-power sunlight-readable display. Jepsen's own company has announced plans to produce a commercially available $75 laptop similar to the XO-1. The XO-1 is currently only available for education and costs $188 per laptop. According to the Pixel Qi official site, the company is not a competitor with OLPC, but a collaborator.
