60 Minutes is a CBS television news program that first aired in 1968. The show was created by Don Hewitt and focuses on reporter-centered investigation. It has won numerous awards including 78 Emmys and is considered to be the preeminent investigative television program created in the United States. The show debuted in September 24, 1968 and was originally aired on a bi-weekly basis. The creator of the show, Don Hewitt, chose Walter Cronkite, Mike Wallace and Harry Reasoner as hosts. Andy Rooney began contributing commentary at the end of each show starting in 1978. 60 Minutes is also aired via CBS Radio on several of their radio stations at the same time as the television broadcast across the country. A podcast version of the full show is also distributed on iTunes. On each episode, three full length stories are covered.
The topics of the show range from celebrity profiles to full investigative reports of political or corporate corruption. Each show begins with the trademark "Tick Tick Tick" sound effect and ends with the Andy Rooney segment, a usually light-hearted and humorous commentary on daily life, which have occasionally led to complaints from viewers. The show is currently in it's forty second season and holds the record for the longest continuously running program of any genre scheduled during American network prime time TV.
