Background
Set in Communist Russia, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is about two university friends, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) and Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), who schedule an illegal abortion for Gabita with a stranger, Mr. Bebe (Vlad Ivanov).
Despite efforts made to keep the situation under wraps, certain arrangements fall through, which provoke Mr. Bebe before the procedure. As a means to keep Mr. Bebe from walking out on them, Otila sleeps with him, much to Gabita's dismay. The abortion goes on as scheduled without further complications.
4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days was heavily praised upon its release, making the top 10 lists of several critics, including Kenneth Turan's, A.O. Scott's and Lisa Schwarzbaum's. It won both the Palme d'Or and the FIPRESCI Award at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival.
