3D-Coat is a 3D program that has features such as voxel sculpting, UV-mapping, retopology and texture painting. The current version is http://www.3d-coat.com/company/about-us/3D-Coat 3.3. It was created by the programmer Andrew Shpagin. Shpagin began his career as a game developer on projects like Cossacks: European Wars, Alexander and Heroes Of Annihilated Empires.
A customer can purchase a commercial or academic license for 3D-Coat. The commercial license costs $285 while the academic version is $140.http://www.3d-coat.com/buy-now/ The academic version can not be used professionally. It is also limited to using only 7 layers and 2048 by 2048 texture exports.http://www.3d-coat.com/buy-now/ If a user buys the commercial license within 30 days of using the demo, he can purchase the software for $235.http://www.3d-coat.com/buy-now/
Voxel Sculpting
In 3D-coat, an artist can use voxel sculpting to create 3D models. Unlike traditional 3D sculpting, voxels are dependant on the volume not polygons in a mesh.http://www.3d-coat.com/voxel-sculpting/ Voxel technology allows the user to sculpt models that have holes and unconnected sections from a single origin.http://www.3d-coat.com/voxel-sculpting/ Also, it does not have polygon stretching.http://www.3d-coat.com/voxel-sculpting/
The program also has a system of curve manipulation. The curves help the sculptor make any free flowing appendage or fiber.http://www.3d-coat.com/voxel-sculpting/ Examples are hair and tentacles.
UV-mapping
If a user plans to use his model in another 3D program or game, he will need UVs assigned to his model's surface. 3D-Coat has several tools to assist with assigning and organizing UV texture coordinates. It has 3 different UV-mapping algorithms: LSCM, ABF++ and planar.http://www.3d-coat.com/uv-mapping/ The artist can check the placement of UVs by using either the no checker, simple checker or complex checker display modes.http://www.3d-coat.com/uv-mapping/
Retopology
Retopology is useful when a 3D sculptor needs to give a model new edge flow, which is the case for models that need smooth morphing/bending in animations. 3D-Coat lets the user place points or paint lines directly on the figure that needs a new topology.http://www.3d-coat.com/retopology/ The finished mesh can be tweaked by cutting new edges or moving the surface with a brush to adjust the fit.http://www.3d-coat.com/retopology/
Texture Painting
3D-Coat utilizes per pixel painting techniques.http://www.3d-coat.com/texture-painting/ This allows the user to paint a high amount of detail on a low or high polygon model.http://www.3d-coat.com/texture-painting/ The software can transfer the high polygon information to the low version.http://www.3d-coat.com/texture-painting/ The texture painting mode supports ambient occlusion, texture layers, specular and normal maps.http://www.3d-coat.com/texture-painting/
Multi-resolution Sculpting in 3D-Coat
In this instructional video, the speaker demonstrates how to use the multi-resolution feature in 3D-Coat 3.3. The footage shows the user interface and common techniques like using the sculpting brush. By using the reduce options, a user can lower the resolution of a model to increase the computing performance of the program.
