In the past, customers could activate their iPhones over the web with iTunes. Shortly after the official announcement of the iPhone 3G, it was revealed that all phones must be activated in store.¹ If true, it may present a larger barrier for hacking the iPhone 3G to use other carriers. In the case of the original iPhone, several million phones were never activated through AT&T. It is assumed these phones were used with other carriers or hacked for various use.
