The alternative rock band 30 Seconds to Mars was formed in 1998 by Jared and Shannon Leto. The band consists of Jared Leto on vocals and guitar, Tomo Milicevic on guitar, Matt Wachter on keyboard and bass, and Shannon Leto on drums. Their first album which is self-titled was released in 2002 and only reached approximately 100,000 sales. The second album that they released in August 2005 was called A Beautiful Lie. This album went platinum and included the song The Kill which won the MTV2 Award in August 2006 and had been nominated for Best Rock Video category but did not win. The bands third album This is War was released in December 2009 amidst a time of difficulty with their record label Virgin Records. One of the songs is titled Hurricane and it is considered to be one of their best songs ever. The song Hurricane features Kanye West’s traditional beats along with Jared Leto and the bands space rock style. Kanye repeats “heartbeat, a heartbeat, I need a heartbeat, a heartbeat” throughout the song which is followed by Jared Leto saying “Tell me would you kill to save your life?
