20th Century Fox

William Fox, one of the founders of 20th Century Fox was a Hungarian immigrant. He arrived in New York City in 1904 bringing his Nickelodeon, an early form of movie theater. Fox added 25 nickelodeons along with two partners, B.S. Moss and Sol Brill over the next few years. They soon started producing their own movies, as the demand for them was so high.

In 1915, Fox started the Fox Film Corporation and moved his company to California in an effort to better produce, distribute and show the movies. Fox Films relocated again in 1925 to land purchased in Hollywood, California. After some company shake-ups, stockholders forced out William Fox who was replaced by Sidney R. Kent.

In the meantime, Twentieth Century Pictures was a company has a successful beginning with The House of Rothschild and Les Miserables, both nominated for an Academy Award. A merge of these two companies in 1935 created the new Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation. In 1953, the company produced The Robe in CinemaScope, a groundbreaking feature film. The success was so great that on see the film Warner Bros, MGM, Universal Pictures and Disney adopted the process. Twentieth Century Fox has continued to produce hits through the years. In the 1960’s, they produced The Sound of Music, Dr. Doolittle and Hello, Dolly!. The 1970 has brought us The Towering Inferno, Young Frankenstein and Star Wars. The release of Alien, The Empire Strikes Back, Home Alone and Edward Scissorhands came in the 80’s and 90’s. The 1990 has brought new opportunities to the company with the use of pay-per-view and video games. In 1994, Twentieth Century-Fox negotiated and agreement with DirecTV.
