Since the International Olympic Committee's inception in 1894, cities wanting to host the Olympics have competed against one another in a lengthy bidding process that takes two years to complete. The bidding process for the 2016 Summer Olympics began on September 13, 2007, which marked the deadline for interested cities to submit their bids.
