In 2009, American geologist Adrian Helmsley learns that neutrinos from a massive solar flare are causing the temperature of the Earth's core to increase rapidly. Adrian informs White House Chief of Staff Carl Anheuser and United States President Thomas Wilson that this will trigger a catastrophic chain of natural disasters.

Approximately 400,000 people are chosen to board ships called "arks" that are constructed in the Himalayas. Additional funding for the project is raised by selling tickets to the private sector for one billion euros per person. A series of natural disasters, from earthquakes to tsunamis ravage the surface of the Earth, wiping out everything in their path. Jackson Curtis, played by Cusack, is the main protagonist in the film.

Jackson takes Noah and Lily camping in Yellowstone National Park, where they meet Charlie Frost, who hosts a radio show from the park. Charlie references a theory that suggests the Mayans predicted the world would come to an end in 2012, and claims he has knowledge and a map of the ark project. The family returns home as seismic activity increases along the west coast. Jackson grows suspicious and rents a plane to rescue his family. He collects his family and Gordon as the Earth crust displacement begins, and they escape Los Angeles using a Cessna 340 as the city crumbles into the Pacific.

Trailer Review Quotes

  • "I'll be completely honest, Emmerich hasn't made a great movie in the last decade. And while I can admit this teaser is promising, I have a feeling that 2012 will be nothing more than a bunch of cool disaster effects sequences strung together."—SlashFilmSlashFilm: Roland Emmerich's 2012 (November 12, 2008)
  • "Some say the world will end in fire, some say in ice. A new teaser for 2012 suggests it may also involve giant walls of water. The film takes it's cue from the handful of people who believe the world will end in 2012, and they in turn get their belief from the "fact" that the Mayan calendar apparently ends on December 21, 2012. Natural disasters including earthquakes, hurricanes, and volcanic eruptions hack and slash away at life on Earth until only John Cusack, Amanda Peet, and a few thousand others are left alive. (Why it's not called A Couple More Days After Tomorrow I don't know)."—Film School RejectsFilmSchoolRejects: Digital Waves Were Once Impressive (November 13, 2008)
