Team Selection
At the end of each NFL regular season, the winner in each of the eight divisions across the league automatically qualifies for the NFL Playoffs. In each conference, the two teams with the best regular-season records that did not win their respective divisions also qualify as wild-card teams. If there is a tie between teams in wild-card contention, other factors such as the win-loss record within each division, the win-loss record in common games and the strength of each victory, among other things, are used to break the tie. The two wild-card teams in each conference participate in the wild-card weekend and play against the two division winners in each conference with the worst regular-season records. The two teams in each conference with the best regular-season records receive a bye and do not play in the wild-card round.http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures
