The World Cup tournament starts on June 11, 2010, the day after the opening ceremony. The tournament finishes with the World Cup Final which is to be played on July 11, 2010.
The World Cup 2010 is the first ever to be staged on the continent of Africa. Thirty two teams are competing in the event and these have been divided into eight groups of four teams. Of the initial 32 teams only 16 will progress from the group stage. The tournament will then become knockout with first the round of 16, then the quarter finals, followed by the semi final and the culmination in the final. There will also be a 3rd/4th place decider match.

Announced performers for the world cup 2010 opening ceremony are American artists Alicia Keys, Black Eyed Peas and John Legend. From Colombia there are Juanes and Shakira. African performers include Angelique Kidjo, Amadou and Mariam, Tinariwen, and Vieux Farka Touré. South African musician Vusi Mahlasela will also perform as will Johannesburg bands BLK JKS and The Parlotones.
