MLB Postseason Format
In the MLB Postseason, the top team, determined by regular-season record, in each of the six divisions qualify for the playoffs. Two additional spots, one each in the National League and American League, are allocated for a wild-card team and given to the team in the league with the best record that did not win the division. All eight teams compete in the best-of-five-games Divisional Series, with the winning teams continuing on to the League Championship Series. The American League Championship Series and National League Championship Series are both played in a best-of-seven-games format, with the teams who win four games taking the League Championship and earning a place in the World Series. The winner of the World Series, which is also played in a best-of-seven format, is named the Major League Baseball World Champion.http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/schedule/ps.jsp?y=10
