2010 California Marriage Protection Act

  • The 2010 California Marriage Protection Act is a piece of proposed legislation that would ban divorce in the state of California, stating "No party to any marriage shall be restored to the state of an unmarried person during the lifetime of the other party."

The bill was introduced in September of 2009 by John Marcotte, who describes himself as "a firm believer in traditional family values. He currently opposes gay marriage, Obama talking to children and MSNBC's entire prime-time line-up."

  • The Point

Marcotte's point in proposing the act is that if Prop 8 was supposedly passed to protect the majority of voters' idea of what marriage should be then perhaps banning divorce could go even further, stating, "Sometimes other people need to sacrifice in order to protect my ideas about traditional marriage." He says he is a Catholic whose religion denounces divorce at all costs. http://www.cockeyed.com/citizen/divorce/divorce.php
