2008 Pennsylvania Primary

  • The 2008 Pennsylvania Primary was held on April 22, 2008. 158 delegates, plus 30 Superdelegates to be allocated at the 2008 Democratic Convention, were at stake for the Democratic Party, and 74 for the Republicans.
  • Democratic primary

On the Democratic side, the popular vote went, as expected, to Clinton, with 55% to Obama's 45%. Her win will result in a gain of at least 80 delegates, with Obama picking up at least 66. As of April 23, 12 delegates remain unpledged. Clinton's Pennsylvania gain will make little mathematical difference going into the 2008 Indiana Primary, since Obama leads decisively in both the popular vote and the delegate count (with roughly 1714 delegates to Clinton's 1589). However, the contest at the 2008 Democratic Convention, set for St. Paul, Minnesota on August 25, may be decided by unpledged superdelegates, among whom Clinton has an early but uncertain lead.
  • Republican primary

The Republican primary in Pennsylvania was a formality: According to the Republicans' winner-take-all primary system, John McCain has already taken the GOP nomination. Libertarian candidate Ron Paul nonetheless picked up 16% of the vote, while Mike Huckabee, a favorite among evangelical voters, picked up 11%.
