The 2007 Nobel Prize in physics was awarded to German scientists Albert Fert and Peter Grunberg for their application of giant magnetoresistance (GMR) to hard disk technology. Developments in this field has led to the ability to store a greater amount of information in a smaller space, which paved the way for smaller storage devices like iPods, PSPs and laptops.
