The American 2000 General Election took place on November 7, 2000 between Al Gore of the Democratic Party and George W. Bush of the Republican Party. Incumbent President, Bill Clinton had served the maximum two terms. George W. Bush had a narrow win with 271 electoral votes to Al Gore's 266. The election became controversial because there was some uncertainty over who won Florida's 25 electoral votes and the presidency itself. Because of the narrow margin, Florida law mandated a statewide recount.USA Today: Newspaper's Recount Say Bush Prevailed (May 15, 2001) The Supreme Court concluded that the recount in Florida was unconstitutional and voted to give George W.
