The "Great Hanshin earthquake" caused massive damage around Kobe, Japan, killing 6,434 people. American Airlines Flight 965 crashed into a Colombian mountain, killing 160 people.
The OJ Simpson murder trial was major news worldwide. Simpson was eventually found not guilty of the murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Kevin Mitnick was arrested by the FBI for hacking into some of the United States' most secure computer systems.
Superman Actor Christopher Reeve was paralyzed from the neck down after falling from a horse. The first ever full-length computer animated feature film "Toy Story" was released.

Barings Bank collapsed after rogue trader Nick Leeson lost $1.4Billion by speculative trading on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
