The North Tower of the World Trade Center was bombed, killing 6 people and injuring over 1,000 more. 76 people were killed at the Waco, Texas siege, including cult leader David Koresh. $7.4 million was stolen from the Brinks Armored Car Depot in Rochester, New York.
In computers, the Y2K problem was discussed for the first time, Intel released the Pentium chip and Microsoft's Windows NT 3.1 was released.
Fighting continued between Bosnian and Serbian forces in Bosnia, Czechoslovakia divorces and Slovakia and the Czech Republic become separate countries. In a large-scale battle in Mogadishu, Somalia, 18 US forces and over 1,000 Somalians were killed.
