The stock market crash began in Hong Kong, spread west through international time zones, hitting the United States after other markets had already declined by a substantial margin. 1987 was also the year that American politician Budd Dwyer committed suicide on national television. It was during a televised press conference in which he shot himself in the mouth with a revolver.
