During the year,on Monday, October 19, 1987 stock markets around the world crashed, shedding a huge value in a very short time. The stock market crash began in Hong Kong, spread west through international time zones, hitting the United States after other markets had already declined by a substantial margin. 1987 was also the year that American politician Budd Dwyer committed suicide on national television. It was during a televised press conference in which he shot himself in the mouth with a revolver.
By 1987, cellular telephone subscribers exceeded one million. Also in the world of sports in the 1987 World Series: The Minnesota Twins won despite having the worst regular season win-loss ratio for a winner, a record they hold until 2006. In Super Bowl 23 the Giants beat John Elway and the Denver Broncos 39-20. Guns N' Roses were the years most popular band with their debut album, Appetite For Destruction which was the number one album of 1987.
